The relationship between diabetes and excess weight

Excess weight encourages reduced glucose tolerance and therefore the development of type II diabetes. Almost all type II diabetes patients are overweight. Every kilogram of fat uses up insulin.
Therefore, steady weight loss (i.e. the reduction of excess weight) of just a few kilograms can improve insulin sensitivity and normalize blood glucose levels. This means that type II diabetes is held in check if patients can lose their excess weight.

Weight loss, weight loss, weight loss

The symptoms of type II diabetes disappear along with excess weight. However, the disposition toward diabetes still remains, and symptoms may reappear if it worsens. This solution does not work for type I diabetes because it is an autoimmune disease and patients are not able to produce insulin at all.

High risk metabolic conditions

Diabetes, excess weight and excess abdominal fat (abdominal fat deposits) may also be part of a metabolic condition. It is insulin resistance in particular which makes metabolic conditions so dangerous.

Undiagnosed insulin resistance

Due to a metabolic condition, a patient may build up an increasing resistance to insulin over several decades without necessarily noticing. The number of sufferers with as yet undiagnosed and therefore untreated diabetes is estimated at up to 40 per cent of the population.
To improve blood glucose levels, experts recommend close monitoring and recording of both these values and the body weight. This can be done easily using an integrated system that includes the measuring devices GlucoTel for diabetes and WeightTel for weight.
